Why 'dumb' apps are so popular — and why they're not going anywhere

A messaging app called Ethan recently topped the charts at Product Hunt, the Reddit-like site where investors and journalists often hear about the hottest new apps and products first.


The app, created by a guy named Ethan, is an app that allows users to message him. That's all it does. Ethan said he created the app because he wanted to find a simple way for his friends to get in touch (he doesn't use Facebook) and the idea of owning all the data appealed to him.


But, inexplicably, the app blew up beyond his circle of friends. The app shot up Product Hunt's rankings and hundreds of people who didn't know Ethan (the person) began using Ethan (the app) as a kind of personal assistant. Read more...
